Australia has updated its skilled visa framework to address workforce demands more effectively. Key changes today include the introduction of a Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) and a new Skills in Demand (SID) visa that has replaced the previous Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) Visa.

Features of the SID Visa:

  • Duration: Allows most visa holders to stay in Australia for up to 4 years.

  • Pathway to Permanent Residence: All work with an approved employer counts towards eligibility for permanent residence.

  • Reduced Work Experience Requirement: Applicants need only 1 year of relevant work experience, compared to the 2 years required under the TSS visa.

  • English Language Requirement: Same as the TSS medium-term stream which is equivalent to at least scoring 5 in each of the 4 components for IELTS.

Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

The CSOL replaces multiple skilled occupation lists previously used for the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. This streamlined list contains over 450 occupations across critical sectors such as:

  • Construction

  • Cybersecurity

  • Agriculture

  • Health

For the complete list of occupations, see here for the Core Skills Occupation List.

NOTE: This list only applies to:

  1. Core Skills stream of the 482 Visa (Skills in Demand Visa) and

  2. Direct Entry stream of the 186 Visa (Employer Nominated Scheme).

SID Visa Streams

The SID visa is divided into three streams tailored to different workforce needs:

1. Core Skills Stream

For applicants with:

  • An occupation on the CSOL identified as being in shortage.

  • A salary of at least AUD73,150 or as specified under international trade agreements.

2. Specialist Skills Stream

For highly skilled migrants driving innovation and productivity. Eligibility includes:

  • Occupations listed in the ANZSCO 2022, excluding Major Group Levels 3, 7, and 8 (trades workers, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers).

  • A minimum salary of AUD135,000, ensuring parity with Australian workers in similar roles.

3. Labour Agreement Stream

Currently being phased out and replaced by the Essential Skills Stream (under development).

Impact on Existing TSS Visa Holders

  • Applications for the TSS visa closed on 6 December 2024. Any applications lodged before this date will be processed under the old arrangements.

  • Current TSS visa holders retain a pathway to permanent residence, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

Pathway to Permanent Residency (PR)

After working for any employer for 2 years in the nominated occupation on a 482 visa, you can apply for PR through the "Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream" of the 186 Visa (Employer Nominated Scheme). For more information about this, you can click here!
